Maximo MicroSociety® Extended Learning Program

What is MicroSociety?

MicroSociety is a nationally recognized program, where children in Grades K–5 work together with parents, business people, and educators to create a miniature society, complete with their own currency, laws, and economy. This research-based education program transforms classrooms into functioning communities of learners.

How does MicroSociety work at Maximo?

Interested students participate in a “Micro” Extended Learning after school program 2 days a week (on Tuesdays and Thursdays) for a hour from 3:00-4:00 p.m.  The program currently focuses on Science and Robotics projects and learning opportunities.

Why is MicroSociety Important?

The MicroSociety program is designed to empower young people to take an active role in their own education. When learning is relevant to kids, they not only want to be in school, but they also want to succeed.

Students who participate in the MicroSociety ELP experience higher levels of thinking and learning as they solve problems and manage their learning.

Student achievement rises as children strive to achieve their personal goals. Goals provide a place to start, a path to take, and a finish line, so you know when you get there. Choosing goals takes thought and self-reflection. Accomplishing goals requires persistence and improved self-esteem. MicroSociety provides multiple opportunities for all children to succeed as individuals and in groups and creates an environment where all children feel a sense of belonging and responsibility for each other and their community.

Mrs. Brackx, the MicroSociety® Coordinator holds our Magnet School of Excellence Award.

What does the MicroSociety look like at Maximo?

Maximo’s unique building design models a city Main Street. It includes a Town Hall, a Music Studio, Mariner’s Bank, the Post Office, cobblestone streets, street and stop signs, and storefront classrooms. This character education program encourages students to use Guidelines for Success and the concept of HEART in all that they do. MicroSociety HEART encourages students to give back to their community through community service. Through MicroSociety, students develop a strong work ethic to prepare them to become responsible and productive citizens of the future.
