Maximo MicroSociety® and Visual Arts Magnet

What is MicroSociety?

Maximo MicroSociety® Pledge
As a responsible citizen of Maximo,
I pledge to make smart choices I know.
To respect adults and kids alike,
To use my words and never fight,
To walk on school grounds,
To not use put-downs,
To always do my personal best,
My job is to learn like all the rest.
MicroSociety is a nationally recognized program, where children in Grades K–5 work together with parents, business people, and educators to create a miniature society, complete with their own currency, laws, and economy. This research-based education program transforms classrooms into functioning communities of learners. The following ventures and agencies are included at Maximo: the Mariner’s Bank, Post Office, a Court, the Sunshine Times Newspaper, Reader’s Theatre, a Science & Recycling Center, CrimeStoppers, Maximo TV News, the IRS, Math Fun & Games, and Multicultural Institutes.

How does MicroSociety work at Maximo?

Students participate in “Micro” 3 days a week (on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays) for a 40-minute period, from 2:05–2:45 p.m. They work as producers, consumers, legislators, bankers, attorneys, bookkeepers, sales clerks, production workers, and in many other jobs as well as build government and social agencies and create cultural arts organizations. Traditional subjects are taught to students in the regular classes, using the best instructional practices, and then these skills are applied, in a practical way, during the “MicroSociety” part of the day.

Skills necessary to run the society are learned “on the job” as well as in the classroom. Students participate in business meetings, develop business plans, integrate technology, learn about Roberts Rules of Order, and provide ideas for products or services in their businesses. In addition, they brainstorm ideas to deal with the problems that they encounter.

Students earn wages in “friendship dollars”, the school currency, pay taxes and rent, and become producers and consumers in a free-market economy. Economic concepts are taught within the program and integrated throughout the school day. All students go out for “consumer break” twice a month where, they become consumers in the society. This gives them the opportunity to shop for goods, visit the service ventures, and complete their banking. Student CrimeStoppers patrol the halls, making sure that all are following school rules and using their Lifelong Guidelines and Life Skills.

Why is MicroSociety Important?

The MicroSociety program is designed to empower young people to take an active role in their own education. When learning is relevant to kids, they not only want to be in school, but they also want to succeed.

Students who participate in MicroSociety experience higher levels of thinking and learning as they solve problems and manage their learning. Most importantly, they experience the pride and benefits of their labor as they become business owners, judges, bankers, legislators, and entrepreneurs in a safe and supportive learning environment.

Student achievement rises as children strive to achieve their personal goals. Goals provide a place to start, a path to take, and a finish line, so you know when you get there. Choosing goals takes thought and self-reflection. Accomplishing goals requires persistence and improved self-esteem. MicroSociety provides multiple opportunities for all children to succeed as individuals and in groups and creates an environment where all children feel a sense of belonging and responsibility for each other and their community.

What is the Parental/Community Involvement in MicroSociety?

Mrs. Brackx, the MicroSociety® Coordinator holds our Magnet School of Excellence Award.

Maximo has worked together with several businesses to form partnerships that include mentoring, training for students, donations of goods, and monetary support. They are the University of South Florida College of Business, Bank of America, The Mayor’s Mentors and More Program, Wal-Mart, and Publix. Several other businesses in the St. Petersburg area are past or current supporters of Maximo staff and students, including the Pinellas County Election Service Center, Chick-fil-A, Bob Evans, Papa John’s Pizza, Best Design Center, Savannah’s Nursery, Hands On Recycling, and Dominos’ Pizza.

How can I get involved at Maximo as a parent or business?

We would like to increase our parental/business support to include more mentors in the classrooms during Micro Time where students can learn from adults, as they work side-by-side in a hands-on venture or agency. The Adopt-a-Classroom Program is another great way to help our students. If you can volunteer or support us in any way, please contact us at 727-893-2191, Ext. 2054. What does the MicroSociety look like at Maximo?

Maximo’s unique building design models a city Main Street. It includes a Town Hall, a Music Studio, Mariner’s Bank, the Post Office, cobblestone streets, street and stop signs, and storefront classrooms. Young entrepreneurs are given opportunities to develop their own businesses. This character education program encourages students to use Lifeskills and Lifelong Guidelines and the concept of HEART in all that they do. MicroSociety HEART encourages students to give back to their community through community service. Through MicroSociety, students develop a strong work ethic to prepare them to become responsible and productive citizens of the future.
